Screen 2
Little denser than we normally go, here; if this doesn’t work, let me know. I’m imagining the second row of tight CUs.
FIRST ROW:
ONE:
Wide tableau. Yes, I know, I’m really dragging this out. What can I say? I keep hearing Ennio Morricone music in my head as I write this….
NO COPY.
SECOND ROW.
TWO:
CU on DRAKE’S RIGHT HAND, hovering over the grip of his pistol.
NO COPY.
THREE:
CU one of the GUNMEN, thumbing back the HAMMER on his long gun.
NO COPY.
FOUR:
CU DRUM, easing his multi-gun into position.
NO COPY.
FIVE:
CU another GUNMAN, fingers stroking the grip of his PISTOL.
SIX:
Stet previous, but the GUNMAN is now beginning his DRAW.
NO COPY.
There’s something about Drum’s confident smile…I can’t help but be aware that this comic isn’t called “Drake & Drum”…I worry that there will be plenty of reason for that smile to vanish if things get out of hand on Monday…
I like how Payne is still standing there with his arms folded. He seems frighteningly confident that he won’t be the first man Drake takes down.
Drake is an honest Lawman, and Payne is neither threatening him with a weapon nor currently guilty of breaking any law that Drake can prove. Drake won’t shoot him now, and even if Drake manages to arrest him on some pretense, Payne still owns the local Judge. Even if everyone else dies, Payne walks, and Payne knows it.
On top of what Thulhu pointed out, Payne is also the information source.
…’course he still might catch a slug to the knee… >.>
Before I read the script, I had that same Morricone music playing over the comic!
I can’t seem to match the “fingering” gunman up with one in the scene.
I think the brown coat/black belt & rifle close-up is Mister Top Hat and the pistol close-up is Monsieur Beret Rouge, a bit confusing as he’s already got his pistols drawn in the first panel.
I kind wish there was a tumbleweed blowing across the docks in the first long panel….
Intersting seeing the script. The Crates and the Steam Engine appear to be characters in this scene.
I keep getting a Dave Gibbons vibe off of Rick’s work. Is he an influence? The shots in these panels are just so well constructed…
I think the pistol fingering guy is the third from the top – the one with what looks like a sawed-off over one shoulder – his hand in the big picture is in the right place. Beret Rouge seems to be holding automatic pistols.
Ah yes, I see what you mean. And Ivy Cap is wearing blue pants, as is the man drawing the pistol.
Also, you can see the white butt/crossdraw holster on the previous page.
Yep, definitely Morricone. Firing up Winamp now…
Might I suggest “L’Arena” from the film The Mercenary? Tarantino used it for Kill Bill, but ignore that culture poacher for now. Mercenary was remade a few years later (and better, I think, retaining Palance and Nero, but replacing Tony Musante with Tomas Milian), as ¡Vamos A Matar Companeros! which had a rollicking soundtrack, great, but not appropriate for this scene. “L’Arena”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PykHgkq8-Q
Yes.
That.
Win.
Enjoying the story thus far, just read Chapter two up to this point. Looking forward to a trade version since I still like the page instead of the the screen. I enjoy looking at the backgrounds and seeing what has been placed where as I read along.
And the joke just now dawns on me…. Drum’s favorite reload…. is a drum-fed magazine.
Just a “nit-pick” here 😉
how much time has passed since two pages ago, when Drake and Drum came face to face with Payne and his men? The shadows have changed dramatically, from light almost overhead to a couple hours toward setting.
Drake and Drum left the ship early afternoon, and then proceeded to deal with Stone and Light, and all that came from that. Our chapter now begins with nightfall.
