Wow. What an amazing first chapter. You guys SURE you’ve never done this before?? Congrats again and again.
This may have been answered before, and if so I apologize, but what prompted the decision to include the script with each page?
Justin
There are two reasons that I know of. One is that people with somewhat poor vision can have a screen reader read them the script while they use a magnifier on the image. The other is that page translators like Babel Fish or Google translate cannot affect the image so it is a great way to get the comic to other countries.
Whoa. This is clever and shows care; yet few sites does this.
Woo! That was great! Bring on chapter two!
Is it just me, or can everyone practically HEAR the ships engines in that first panel?
I really enjoy the tone and look of this comic and think it has some cool potential, but it is revealing itself so slowly! Here’s hoping Chapter 2 picks up the pace a bit.
Chapter 2 will pace better, I think. We’ve worked out some of the bumps, so hopefully it’ll show.
Awesome. Can’t wait!
Guess I don’t read comic books enough to see the pacing problems. What am I missing that makes the pacing of chapter one problematic?
Nothing continues to happen in this strip.
Chase scene, sword fight, awesome visuals, action…
Nice first chapter, looking forwards to see the next one 🙂
Loving it so far! Gorgeous art and Rucka is one of my favorite comic writers. First chapter is a great tease of the world and characters, looking forward to more!
Chapter 1 = great fun!
Can we still expect new pages every Monday and Thursday or will there be a little break now? I emphasize “little”. You don’t want me to go into Rucka withdrawal again, do you?
There will be content on Monday, a teaser and new Almanac material. Chapter Two will begin on Thursday!
Chapter 1 has been a delight to read. The art has been nothing short of beautiful.
I’m with Doug, I really want to LOVE this comic but currently I just like it because of the too slow pacing.
Hoping it picks up!
Great first chapter! I disagree with the pace being too slow I thought it was fine I don’t want or need to know everyone’s origin and current agendas right away.
Again It looks and reads amazing, keep up the great work!!
Beautiful. I really enjoyed it. I had no issues with the pace myself. Good luck with the next Chapter.
I know it is supposed to be ineffable, but lets talk about the aether for a bit. The ship that Lady Sabre sails in is showing full billowed sails no matter which direction it sails in and that is against the full power of her thrusters, so quite a gale there, yet it doesn’t effect her hair except to blow it perpendicular to the direction of ships travel and then immediately reverse direction when the ship is seen from a different camera angle. I would recommend drawing the sails furled when the ship is under thruster power and then unfurled with the thrusters shut down to conserve fuel during ordinary cruising.
Hah! Yes, this has been noted, believe me. Right now, it’s falling under Rick’s Artistic License vs. Greg’s Detailed Nature. Rick’s Artistic License is the winner thus far 😉 See also: which way does the flag point?
Its 1:45 am and I just discovered your awesome site! I was already a fan of Greg (mostly his novels and later the comics!) but this coupled with Rick’s amazing artwork and the “locale” of the story is like you guys have read my heart and mind ! Few artists can create an world that mixes so many elements so well and evenly . Your product makes me eager for more.
I loved that you include the script. I don’t read comics regularly, and I’m uninformed about the creative procedures behind them. Seeing the script was insightful.
Late to the party, but what a great read.
Actually to throw in my 2 cents, the pace isn’t slow at all, this moves fast. It would only seem slow if I’d had to wait for the next installment, but by the benefit of finding out about this 3 years into it’s run, it moves along at an exciting pace, and I can enjoy the beautiful artwork.
Well, on the Chapter 2!
Re reading this after a while an still loving it. This opening chapter makes me think of a cross between spelljammer and space: 1899, two old gaming settings that really didn’t get the love they deserved.
That said, I do love the story on its old merits- the old swashbuckling atmosphere, the lovable rogue protagonist and, of course, the alternate history world.
I played Space: 1899 only a couple of times. I think quite literally, twice. Loved the feel of it, just never got a gaming group going around it!
