Page 2
As discussed, we want to stay in close on the exteriors, here, until the full reveal of where we are. So night sky, and sense of “ground.”
ONE:
Close on the wheel-lock hatchway as it opens, SABRE’S hand visible as she pulls herself up. Still no reveal of our heroine.
1. CAPTION/Hans: –I’ll circle AROUND….
TWO:
Topside, the dress in a HEAP, now, abandoned.
NO COPY.
THREE:
OTS the HANS, as he climbs out of another hatchway. In the BG, we can see SABRE, looking around. She’s about to be surrounded. Out of the dress she’s in her ‘base costume,’ I should think – the leather pants and fabulous boots and underbust corset over her dueling shirt. NO SWORD, NO GUN.
This panel will include the night sky, I should think.
NO COPY.
FOUR:
And now on SENECA SABRE, as she whips her head about to look towards Hans, off panel. Eyes shining, hair wild, our pulp pirate heroine.
2. HANS/off: Sabre!
Great page! love the fabulous boots
That was a lovely page!
Dramatic entry! I love her confident expression.
While a completely different genre, I’m as excited for each new screen on Mondays & Thursdays, as I was to get home each day from high school to read the next Bloom County and Far Side strip.
Long live the adventure strip! =o)
Love the big reveal. One detail bothering me. Sabre appears clearly to have no blade with her in the panel where she is closing the hatch. The text description indicate she is to appea unarmed. However, in the big reveal panel, she has at least a sword/sabre hilt on her left hip, but no scabbard/blade extends out. Is she carrying the cutlass that was broken, or am I missing something, or should I just be quiet and wait for Thursday’s panels?
Loving the strip. Can’t wait to see where it goes.
Okay, site ate my first comment. Cutting to chase. In the big reveal panel, is that not a sword hilt on Sabre’s left hip? Is it just a hilt or is there supposed to be more? The written description says NO SWORD NO GUN. Am slightly confused by the otherwise ravishing panel.
In all instances, the screens are the authority over the script. There’s often a disconnect between the two, simply because what’s being posted as “script” is first-draft, or what I submitted to Rick. What you see in the art is the result of ensuing conversations, etc.
Also, sometimes, I write the wrong thing 😀
In this instance, the explanation as to what you’re seeing will be revealed on Thursday.
Sometimes, apparently I do too.
Looking forward to Thursday.
Be seeing you.
That’s a fantastic reveal. I’m really enjoying comparing the script to the final product.
I’m sorry for resorting to hyperbole here, but I really feel that’s one of the best character reveals I’ve ever seen. Not necessarily because of the pacing or panel arrangements (though those add to the effect, of course), but because Mr. Burchett makes me think “of course that’s what she looks like”. It’s like seeing an actor for the first time, and knowing instantly that she has it. This is not just some beautiful redhead, this is a character, a person. Great work, that.
My favourite detail elsewhere; the solid colour block of her hair in the second panel, contrasted against the black background. Lovely.
Best. Character Entrance. Ever.
In three pages you guys have managed to become one of my top 5 favourite webcomics, and I bet you’ll be inching up to number one by the time the year is out. Wonderful.
Sabre’s beautiful! I love her grin!! I agree with others, this was a great character reveal.
This comic is excellent!
Very dramatic.
